Rock Hill & Fort Mill ENT Docs in the Know

Medical Education – Our Key to Optimal Patient Care

Rock Hill & Fort Mill, SC ENT specialists, Dr. Jones and Dr. Kelly, recently attended a medical conference hosted by the Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery of the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). Despite temperatures over 100 degrees and the threat of a Tropical Storm, the conference, a literature review covering some of the more important contributions to the field of Otolaryngology this past year, proved to be excellent. Lectures and discussions pertaining to sinus issues, pediatric ENT, otologic (ear) issues and thyroid problems were thought to be the most interesting and informative.

Best Treatment for Sinus Sufferers

One article of particular interest addressed sinus problems. The article’s authors proved, when, in the appropriate setting, endoscopic sinus surgery greatly improves quality of life, especially when compared to medical treatment (medication and or allergy treatment), or placebo (no treatment).

Best Treatment for Sudden Hearing Loss

Also reviewed was the current treatment of sudden hearing loss, a true otologic (ear) emergency. Early treatment with intratympanic steroids (an injection in the middle ear) was felt to be the best treatment, however, an MRI was necessary to rule out a tumor, which are rare and usually benign.

Best Treatment for Thyroid Tumors

Thyroid tumors, especially cancerous, are increasing in frequency. Surgical treatment is still the best way to diagnose these common growths and treat for both benign tumors and cancer. Fortunately, most cancers are “low grade” and the prognosis is excellent.

Best Treatment for Chronic Tonsil Infections & Sleep Apnea in Children

Finally, many issues in pediatric ENT were discussed, especially with respect to airway management.  Adenotonsillectomy (tonsil and adenoid removal) is highly effective in treating both chronic infections and sleep apnea in children.
